GIS Training Program:
Digital Mapping for Geospatial Analysis

Course Description

A do-it-yourself training program, Applied Digital Mapping and GIS, introduces the technology of Geospatial Information Systems and general methodology for implementing it. The course involves hands-on training on specific GIS projects. The course is conducted both on Windows and Linux platforms.

The course is ideal for college and university students. It is also appropriate for anyone wishing to gain an understanding of GIS as a decision support tool.

Course Contents

  • What is a GIS and what it can do?
  • Some GIS application areas and examples
  • GIS project data needed to complete a project
  • Scanning, importing and georeferencing raster image data,
  • Editing spatial database and attribute database
  • Topological processing of spatial data
  • Style mapping, Theme mapping, Pin mapping
  • Spatial and attribute data analysis
  • Region analysis, Vector Analysis, Grid Analysis
  • Network analysis
  • Displaying GIS project outputs in two dimension
  • Creating final map products
  • Printing a digital map

Enrollment
Class sizes are limited to six persons. They are kept small to ensure that students receive ample instructions and hands-on practice. For registration, click here.

Instructors
Professionals with exposure in a variety of GIS software and applications constitute the instructors.

Software
The training is conducted on a selection of GIS and image processing software with a view to facilitating an exposure to the features and capabilities of these software in GIS, image processing, CAD, desktop cartography, surface modeling and geospatial database management. As such a student can learn to create, enhance, and analyze geospatial data in a variety of forms and make professional presentations of his or her results. A student is able to work with data from a multitude of file formats, all for a minimum time and with maximum flexibility.

Duration
Four weeks @ five hours a day from Monday through Friday
